Costs of grave maintenance

Decisive for the costs of grave maintenance by cemetery gardeners are the intervals between the grave maintenance services and thus the frequency of maintenance per year as well as the size of the grave and the planting area.

Why do I need a grave keeper?

A beautifully tended grave is the last respect that can be paid to a deceased loved one. It is often the heartfelt wish of the bereaved to always leave the grave in an attractive condition. However, if the cemetery is not close to home, if it is a long distance away or if the bereaved lack the experience and time to take care of the grave themselves, it is advisable to hire a professional. It is also a good alternative if the bereaved have health restrictions. Our plant experts ensure that the gravesite looks neat and attractive all year round and leaves a dignified impression. You can choose between our local cemetery gardeners or our specialist companies for professional permanent grave care.

There is usually a choice of weekly, fortnightly, monthly and 6-weekly grave maintenance by the cemetery nursery. The contract with the local cemetery nursery is usually renegotiated once a year.

What influences the grave care costs?

The larger the area to be maintained and the more frequently the maintenance is carried out per year, the higher the costs for grave maintenance by the cemetery nursery. The costs of grave maintenance depend on the wishes of the customer. As a guide, they increase with the size of the gravesite to be maintained, the number of plants to be maintained and the increasing frequency of maintenance. As a rule, regular long-term care can be carried out weekly, fortnightly, monthly or every six weeks. In the warm season in particular, the grave must be watered at regular intervals in order to keep the grave in a perfect and attractive condition. Other influencing factors are the location and size of the cemetery.

Initial setup as an important task

In addition to the subsequent care of the grave, the cemetery gardeners also take care of the initial arrangement of the grave. This means that the first flower arrangements for the funeral can be provided by them, and the removal of flowers and wreaths at an appropriate distance after the funeral can also be carried out by the commissioned cemetery gardeners. It prepares a temporary grave to bridge the months until the permanent grave is installed and takes care of the leveling of the grave and the maintenance of the temporary grave. As soon as the headstone and border have been prepared by the stonemason, the cemetery nursery will take over the initial decoration of the grave with plants or bowls.

Individual permanent grave care by a specialist nursery

An alternative to a cemetery nursery is a local nursery. They are the competent partner for the permanent care of the grave. Personal wishes can be taken into account very well with this option, and the planting can usually be designed freely according to the customer’s taste. The specialist nursery takes care of the regular maintenance of flowers and bowls, ensures the trimming and carries out the alternating planting in the fall and spring.
The grave thus always looks well-kept and designed according to the season. In the fall, the light summer planting is replaced with an alternative suitable for winter, and in the spring, the nursery loosens up the grave for the coming summer months with light planting geared towards light and warmth.

Tasks of a cemetery nursery

If you commission a cemetery gardening company to look after your grave, you also cover the rights and obligations of grave care. Grave maintenance is carried out by professional experts who are familiar with the regulations regarding safety, grave design and plant selection and who have excellent local networks. Experienced gardeners take care of clearing the grave of dirt, leaves and weeds, watering and fertilizing the plants and providing special grave decorations for special occasions. If necessary, they trim and prune bushes and shrubs and ensure that the planting changes according to the weather conditions.

Special consideration of public holidays

As part of the individually coordinated permanent grave care by a local specialist nursery, the personal wishes of the customer can be taken into account very well. In particular, holidays such as All Saints’ Day, Easter or Christmas can be taken into consideration. The anniversary of the birth or death of the deceased loved one can also be specially honored.

The contract term as an influencing factor

The length of the contract term can be negotiated with the local specialist nursery as desired. A period of between five and 25 years is usual. The maximum term depends on the local grave usage rights and varies between 15 and 25 years. During this time, the nursery takes care of regular grave maintenance, including watering, trimming and replacement planting. This is supplemented by the repair of damage to the grave and the execution of individual wishes. Thanks to the long service life, the grave is always in perfect condition, remains attractive and is an eye-catcher for the bereaved, family and other visitors. Commissioning a local nursery with permanent grave care is particularly interesting for customers who only want to conclude this contract once and who want to know that the care of the grave will be in the best hands for many years to come.

Unlike when commissioning a cemetery gardener, the contract does not have to be renegotiated year after year. Instead, the customer can be certain at the time the contract is concluded that the grave will be carefully tended in the long term and always be in the best condition. The costs incurred are usually paid once at the beginning of the contract term, after which no further expenses are incurred. Permanent grave care is therefore associated with an easily calculable cost factor; the annual costs remain manageable and attractive. Due to the long term, permanent grave care is particularly suitable for people who, for a variety of reasons, do not want to or cannot take care of commissioning grave care every year.
